What’s up with the cinema in Southgate?
A new cinema opening up in Reading is being billed as a “touristic experience” for children and families, with some parents reportedly worried about safety and privacy.
Southgate Cinema, on the south side of the River Thames in Reading, opened last week, and its opening day attracted a crowd of about 2,000 people.
“This is the first time in the UK that Southgate has been open for business for more than one day,” a spokesperson for the cinema told the Evening Standard.
“We are offering a limited number of tickets, and those who do not show up can cancel at any time.”
A spokesperson for Southgate, which is owned by Reading Cinemas, said they were “currently in the process of securing additional space”.
“We have a small group of families that are planning to attend for the opening day of the new Southgate Cinemas in Reading,” they said.
“The cinema is staffed by the local police, and we will be taking appropriate measures to ensure safety.”

Read more Reading’s cinema is currently located on the north side of town, across the river from the city’s old SouthGate.
Reading’s new cinema, on that side of Oxford Street, is set in a shopping mall that has been converted into a theatre.
“Reading is home to a number of great theatres and there are many opportunities for families to come and enjoy them,” Reading City Council said in a statement.
“A new SouthGates is also the first theatre opening in the city for more years than we have been in business.”
Southgate is the latest cinema in the country to open after a recent refurbishment of the city centre, including the reopening of the Southgate Shopping Centre.
It has been criticised by some for the amount of space taken up by its new movie screens, and is due to reopen in 2018.
SouthGate cinema has received mixed reviews from some residents.
“It’s definitely not a safe place for children, but that’s just me.
I have children, and they are very protective of me,” one man said.
Others said it was a “terrific place for families”.
“It makes me feel safe to be outside in the garden, it’s so nice to be outdoors,” one woman said.
SouthGaters will also offer free admission to families.
The cinema will be open from 8.00am to 6.00pm daily.
